The Children’s Anorectal Physiology team at NHS Barts Health were after an animation to help ease anxieties and apprehensions for children who have trouble going to the toilet and need to undergo tests to help their doctors, well, get to the bottom of things.
We embarked on our trusty three-pronged approach: discover, develop, deliver. And we’re delighted that the delivery part just keeps on growing!
First, we wanted to discover what the children and young people were thinking and feeling during their trip to the hospital. So, we planned and facilitated an open, engaging and creative workshop with a handful of amazing young volunteers. Together we explored key messages, tone of voice and the different perspectives from which we could narrate their story. We also heard some cracking name ideas for our poo character who would soon become the star of the show… Dr Poo and Wayne Pooney being two of our favourites!
We landed on Captain Poo – our cheeky, fun, reassuring character. We began developing their overall look and feel, personality and narrative. From the insight gathered during the workshop, we knew the voice over had to represent a trusted doctor, while still keeping the animation light-hearted and funny with Captain Poo. We developed a script and storyboard that struck the right balance.
The comms team at NHS Barts Health were also keen for Captain Poo to interact with the character they developed for Young Barts Health – Sunny. So, we quickly adapted our approach to ensure the two of them were best buds!
“We are so appreciative that we have teams like yourselves, who can make a difference. We have been so happy with all the creativity and are looking forward to more in the future.”
