A recent study from the University of Nottingham has unveiled that ‘employees who exhibit higher levels of mindfulness in the digital workplace are better shielded against stress, anxiety, and overload.’
It is argued that employees who practice mindfulness are less susceptible to these negative digital workplace stressors and more able to protect their personal well-being.
Mindfulness at work
Dr Alexa Spence, Associate Professor of Psychology explains that ‘Digital workplace technologies like e-mail, instant messaging and mobile devices have been shown to contribute to perceptions of stress by employees and employees may experience stress when having to adapt to a constantly evolving digital workplace which can lead to burnout and poorer health.’
The UoN research suggests mindfulness, as a practice, serves as a shield against these digital work environment stressors while enabling individuals to safeguard their personal well-being effectively. Prioritising our mental health and well-being in the workplace is crucial. Being more aware, developing healthier habits that support mental resilience and well-being, being attuned to our mental state and needs, and identifying strategies to enhance our ability to cope effectively.
With that in mind Alive have created a #MindfulMoments month with tips and ideas we have learned about being more present, more mindfully intent, fostering presence, self-compassion in your workweek.
Orchestrating #MindfulMoments
Mindful moments are incredibly potent for sparking creativity because they allow our brains to enter a relaxed engagement, often called the ‘default mode network’ (DMN). When enjoying mindful activities, our minds wander and aren’t consciously focused on problem-solving tasks. Instead, we’re in a more open, reflective state. This relaxed state encourages different parts of the brain to communicate with each other, leading to novel connections and insights that fuel creative breakthroughs.
Our #MindfulMoments are simple practices you can incorporate into your day to cultivate calmness, peace, and mental space.
