Here we find out more about Lara: her passions, interests and her creative streak!
What did you do before Alive?
I was doing a few different things! After university I decided to get my journalism qualification – I thoroughly enjoyed honing new skills, meeting new people, gaining new perspectives and really immersing myself into different stories. That’s where my love for communications came from! After that, I worked independently publishing some stories, and then decided to contribute to an EDI newsletter for an NHS ICB. I loved challenging and educating myself.
My role just before this was as a Comms and Engagement Specialist for a medical software company. My job was to gather user insight to help create benefits realisation reports. I loved hearing about different people’s experiences and gaining a diversity of insight that comes from interacting with others. It all helps to build a greater understanding of human nature.
I have loved all my previous roles as my work has tried to make an impact on the wider population, and I’m so grateful for the opportunities I had to be a part of something greater than myself.
Favourite story you’ve worked on?
A few years ago, it was a tumultuous time to be an LGBTQ+ youth group in London that proudly created a safe, kind and caring space for young people within the community. At the time, this meant that LBGTQ+ advocacy organisations such as Mermaids and Stonewall had been subject to criticism from opponents of the LGBTQ+ movement, resulting in Mermaids having to close their helpline to protect their volunteers from abuse.
I decided to showcase the importance of the existence of such youth groups within this landscape. I focused on a group in south London but had to keep the organisation anonymous for their own safety. I engaged with the founders and staff as well as the members themselves. It was an enlightening and powerful experience. I was able to highlight the great work that the group was doing while also putting people’s personal stories in the limelight. I also loved this piece as I’m driven by my values of social justice, equality, and equity for all, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, gender, sexual orientation, or religion.
I felt so honoured that this group trusted me with their story along with its complexities and nuances, especially during such a volatile time. It’s a piece of work I will never forget!
What attracted you to Alive?
The minute I landed on Alive’s webpage, I was hooked. The energy and impact of their work comes across through the screen almost immediately. I loved the way they showcased their work with clients. It really demonstrated that they care about the work they do.
Alive’s focus on their employees is something I find invaluable. It’s lovely to work with a supportive and friendly team! The diversity of the clientele also impressed me: from working with Sainsbury’s to the NHS, the creativity never stops.
Alive also produces campaigns about crucial issues (e.g. The British Red Cross microaggressions campaign) and it’s so rewarding to work for a company that aligns with my personal values of equality, inclusion and diversity.
Where are we most likely to find you outside of work?
In a cosy pub by a fireplace, reading a whodunnit and not realising hours are going by! If not that, then probably sat next to my pup and my easel, lighting incense and painting my feelings!
I love being creative and for me that manifests through painting, sculpting, song writing and cooking.
Finally, something we’d never guess about you?
I’m a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. I was a dedicated teenager and trained more than 4 times a week after school. It was super challenging, both physically and mentally, but it’s an achievement I’m so proud to have!
